Original language description
The case of the Ostrava miners' housing estate and satelite has left an indelible trace on the face of the whole city of Ostrava. It is an example of how a complex socialist plan for the birth of a "New Ostrava" gradually changed into an ageing and simultaneously very attractive city borough Ostrava-Poruba which offers quality living and a peaceful zone. The city was established according to an urbanistic plan after the 2nd World War and during the 1950s it was built up according to the socialist principles and in the spirit of functionalism and consequently was populated as an "independent" city by the first workers of the big socialist factories. Tens of thousands of inhabitants from the industrial parts of Ostrava moved to the estate. The whole complex differed physically and symbolically from the noisy and polluted industrial centre.
