If twentieth-century Czech comics can be said to have produced at least one superstar artist, this undoubtedly be Kája Saudek. A draughtsman of a calibre entirely on a par with the finest American and European cartoonists, Saudek has transformed both theform and the look of Czecn comics for good. His cutting-edge style and sophistication, impeccable choice of technique, inexhaustible inventiveness, and the visual and narrative imagination of his masterpieces - such as Honza Hrom [Johnny Thunder], the two-part cycle about Muriel, and Lips Tullian - do not cease to fascinate us today, decades after they were made. It is deeply regretful that the volatile Czech political climate did not always allow Saudek to dedicate himself to his passion for comic artfreely and without restrictions. The chapter is devoted to the characterization of the changes and major constants in work of Kaja Saudek in relations to political prohibitions and releases of Czech society.
