Original language description
Throughout the twentieth century, adventure stories, whether they involved travelling in outer space or were set in the Wild West, represented the most widespread and most popular subject matter in Czech comics. During the difficult periods in twentieth-century Czech history, these stories to some degree played the role of a reassuring escapist distraction, allowing at least a temporary respite from the grim and grey everyday reality. After all, who wouldn't wish, if only for a moment, to join John Carter on his journey to Mars? Who wouldn't be tempted to travel the North American landscape side by side with Winnetou, the famous red gentleman? Who could fail to be both troubled and excited by the idea of the robotic Mutiny of the Brains? The chapter deals with the changes of Czech science fiction and western comics in the 20th century.
