    The Interpersonal Metafunction in Media Discourse

    In today's globalized world, local media organizations translate and rewrite texts to cater for different purposes and audiences. Thus, inter-lingual as well as intra-lingual translation (Jakobson 1959/2004) takes place. In the process of adjusting a journalistic text to fit the needs of specific addressees in the same or in a different culture, various communication and text strategies are involved. Our aim is to research the transformations that journalistic texts undergo in these inter- and intra-cultural transfers. We are particularly interested in the changes occurring in the process of intercultural communication with respect to the interpersonal metafunction and to the diverse linguistic means of expressing it that are used in the media discourse of English and Czech. Using Presseurop (www.presseurop.eu) as a corpus for analysis, we adopted a contrastive view of English and Czech grounded in Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics and we further follow House's (1997) qualitat
