The Spreading of the Enlightenment on the Stage of the German Municipal Theatre in Brno
Original language description
The City of Brno was the owner of the municipal theatre since 1733, thus the Enlightenment reforms were adopted quite early. Nearby city of Wien ? the cultural centre of the monarchy ? influenced this process considerably. Since the 50s of the 18th century, the theatrical companies performing in German and coming to Brno tried to adapt their repertoire to the new aesthetic requirements. Their repertoire included dramatic plays written mostly by German or French playwrights. Some of the Italian impresarios played crucial role in the process of assertion of the new type of repertoire. They offered the audience in Brno ? apart from various music genres ? comedies written by Carlo Goldoni. Since the beginning of the 70s, the Enlightenment repertoire becamea part of the dramaturgical programme of some of the theatre directors and was observed in the German municipal theatre in Brno for more than two following decades.
