Emil František Burian's Opera
Original language description
Contribution devoted to Emil František Burian (1904-1959), one of the most versatile figures of Czech inter-war culture, and his opera Maryša. The drama Maryša is the most well-known play of Czech realistic art. Similarly as Jenůfa, the play is a rendering of the unchanged order of village society of the 19th century involving a tragic struggle on the part of a young person for the right to love and have an independent life. Burian openly admitted to the influence of Janáček's Jenufa. Janáček influencedBurian the most in terms of the approach to setting music to the words (speech tunes).
