Logical classification of queries for MAS
Original language description
The paper deals with communication of agents in a multi-agent system, in particular with the analysis of questions and answers. Agents communicate with their fellow agents by messaging. In this way they are able to learn new concepts, enrich their ontology and knowledge base, and based on their knowledge make proper decisions. Messages are equipped with the so-called performatives (communicative acts) that determine the type of a message, for instance, Inform, Confirm, Query. In the case of queries, there are only two types of them according to FIPA standard: Query_If and Query_Ref. The message type Query_If is used for asking another agent whether or not a given proposition is true (linguistically so called yes-no questions). The message type Query_Ref is used to ask for the object referred to by a referential expression (linguistically so called WH-questions). Via Query_Ref communicative act, agent can for instance ask for another agent's available services, the distance between two destinations, the agent's velocity etc. Hence, a great amount of distinctive types of queries comes under Query_Ref type. Linguists distinguish several subtypes of WH-queries. It would be useful to distinguish sub types in MAS as well, because each specialized subtype of Query_Ref provides a specific instruction for an agent where to find the respective answer. Hence a finer classification will improve agents' intelligent behaviour. Yet the linguistic classification of WH-questions is not appropriate for MAS applications. Thus we propose a logical-oriented classification of WH-questions, which is the main novel contribution of this paper.
