Diachronic Development of English Relativizers: A Study in Grammar Competition
Original language description
This chapter reviews and analyzes the three novel ways of introducing restrictive relative clauses that have entered English since the early Middle Ages. Two of the three are due to Grammar Competition, once between Old Norse and Old English, and once between English and French. A third (contact relatives) arose spontaneously without such an impetus.
