The Execution of John the Baptist and the Crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth: A Chronological Conundrum
Original language description
John the Baptist's execution can be dated to years 35-36 CE on the basis of historical circumstances mentioned in New Testament sources as well as Josephus Flavius. On the other hand, it is highly improbable that the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth tookplace later than 33 CE. Therefore, contrary to Gospel narratives, it is highly probable that Jesus of Nazareth was crucified earlier than John the Baptist was executed. The idea that John the Baptist preceded Jesus is probably a theological constructionthat reflects and justifies the fusion of two charismatic movements in first-century Judea and Galilee: that of Jesus' followers and John's followers.
