Re-evaluation of the Jewish Pantheon: Josephus Flavius and Jewish Historical Writings in Bohemia
Original language description
Parallel to German historiography of the eighteenth century, the beginnings of modern Jewish historiography were closely linked to biography. Maskilim published biographies of their intellectual and cultural heroes and thereby established an alternativepantheon of enlightened Jewry. The paper takes Flavius Josephus' biography and the reception of his writings amongst Jews as a test case to demonstrate Bohemia's pioneering role in the field of modern Jewish historical writings around 1800.
