Poetry as a Part of Everyday Life According to Fred Chappell
Original language description
The article focuses on various manifestations of Fred Chappell's conviction that poetry should be a part of people's everyday life. Public poetry, in the opinion voiced in his essays, short stories, and interviews, should be sincere, spontaneous, and meaningful, follow the best traditions of folk culture, and domesticate the most suitable foreign poetic types and genres. In his short stories "The Memorial Poem" and "Mankind Journeys through Forests of Symbols," Chappell introduces characters who unexpectedly face a life situation which makes them turn to writing poetry: one tries to write an epitaph for his wife's grave, the other must compose a symbolist poem in the French manner to save the local community. In both cases, the characters succeed in their efforts, and as a side effect sharpen their senses enrich their future lives.
