The monograph conceived and edited at Palacky University Olomouc is a common effort of seven European literary historians from four countries, who examine various aspects of the South as seen from elsewhere. The book explores benefits of looking at a region from a spatial or cultural distance. It deals with southern writers, who spent substantial periods of their lives outside the South (in Europe, Mexico, or in Canada) and whose writings were influenced by foreign environments and cultures. It also shows that writers can feel elsewhere in their own region and even within their own family. Several chapters examine the role of southern stereotypes in the perception of the South by non-southern writers, as well as their positive role in overcoming obstacles in an alien social and cultural space. The analysis of novels and autobiographies of seven southern 20th century writers clearly shows a development in the perception of the South - the contemporary writers perceive it as a heterogeneous region with many competing local histories. Among southern writers discussed in the individual chapters are Ellen Glasgow, Katherine Anne Porter, Lillian Smith, Katharine Du Pre Lumpkin, Elizabeth Spencer, Louis Owens, Colson Whitehead, and Chris Offutt.
