Relocation of British Romanticism and Landscape in the Poetry of Canadian Sunshine Coast by John Pass

  • Original language description

The article deals with the Canadian identity as based on the personal experience of the Canadian poet John Pass. The paper looks at the ways in which the regionalist poetry of Pass has been shaped by the British tradition. In particular, the influence ofthe first-generation romantics, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, are examined to show a shared passion for nature and the philosophy of pantheism. The paper furthermore demostrates that John Pass has an affinity to the second generation of English Romantics in the use of images that refer to art and the elements (water, fire, earth, and wind). Finally, the paper analyses the effect of the Canadian landscape (the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia) on the poetry of Pass in comparison withthe British landscape poetry of the Romantic poetry.
