The end of the Cold War and the subsequent opening of the territories of the former Eastern Bloc countries and their archives acted as a trigger for border research of the communist and post-communist periods. This study introduce the special section that reflects on the ideological significance of borders for the communist regimes, as well as on everyday practices of bordering.
