The Loincloth, Trousers, and Horse-riders in Pre-Islamic Java: Notes on the Old Javanese Term Lañcinan
Original language description
The article takes a fresh look at the Old Javanese term lañcinan. It is argued that lañcinan, commonly rendered "trousers," originally denoted a type of loincloth used in the context of warfare. Furthermore, it is proposed to dissociate the introduction of trousers to Java from the cultural and religious influences of Islam. It is argued that a bifurcate lower garment was first adopted by cavalry in the 13-14th centuries CE.
