Against Ethnic Stereotyping: Willa Cather's My Ántonia

  • Original language description

In her novel My Ántonia Cather continued her successful series of immigrant novels, which allowed her to find her true artistic voice as well as mediating her pressing agenda, correction and imaginative re-vision of the largely negative representations of the European immigrants in the context of growing xenophobia at the turn of the century. The paper discloses and analyzes the narrative strategies she employs to challenge the prevailing ethnic stereotyping and also points to the inevitable limits of those efforts.
