R. L. Stevenson and the Fin de Siècle Pre-Modernist Narrative Mosaic
Original language description
The paper argues that fantastic literature of the end of the 19th century exploited new modes of representation and experimentation with narrative techniques. In his New Arabian Nights and The Dynamiter R. L. Stevenson explored new possibilities of the fantastic in the play of chance and invented a new narrative technique, a narrative mosaic. With this narrative technique he helped to extend the experiments of fantastic literature and he also broke new ground for future applications of this special kind of episodic method, which keeps a fragile balance between the autonomy and completeness of an episode in a series and the open-ended incompleteness and sequential plot of the serial.
