Sacred Polities, Natural Law and the Law of Nations in the 16th-17th Centuries
Original language description
The conference concerned the idea of Natural Law as it has been conceived by the Dutch humanist and lawyer Hugo Grotius (1583-1645), especially in his treatise De Jure Belli ac Pacis (1625) but also in other works. His ideas were welcomed mainly by Protestant thinkers. Another important theoretic on natural law, from the Catholic side, was Francisco Suárez, S.J. (1548-1617), whose De legibus ac deo legislatore (1612) was the second most important treatise for the formation of international law. The conference focusses on the interaction between both treatises, their influence an further development of ideas on Natural Law and International Law.
