Velehrad on Wikipedia: Religious Memory in the Digital Realm
Original language description
The article builds upon previous research on historical consciousness in Czech Republic and on its findings about the importance of Internet as a source of information and about the ambiguity of Velehrad as a place of memory. Therefore, the aim of the article is to clarify some of the ambiguities in the meaning of Velehrad as a place of memory and to do so while taking into consideration the role of Internet as an increasingly dominant source of information. One of the most popular sources of information on the Internet today is Wikipedia. Taking advantage of its archival functions, I analyzed a cluster of Wikipedia pages related to Velehrad, including their history, categorization and links. The article describes the process of extending and editing the pages in the course of a 10 year long period (2005--2015). The analysis shows that there are several discernible layers of meaning superimposed in the descriptions of Velehrad and that this superimposition displaces meanings related to the period of Great Moravia while favoring meanings associated with some of the core values of modernity.
