  • Original language description

In 1646, Giles Randall published an English translation of Cusanus's De visione Dei. This contribution evaluates this Cusanus text in seventeenth-century England by way of taking a close look at the textual properties of Randall's translation. The translator makes an effort to convey the peculiarities of Cusanus's style to the English readers and thus familiarizes them with Cusanian forms of thought. Randall's introduction to the book emphasizes dualistic tropes like light and darkness, God and Satan, etc. He classifies belief and disbelief in God in four degrees, the lowest being atheists. This translation presents Cusanus as an author who exhorts to understand the presence of God in the world through paradoxes.
