Nicholas of Cusa's discourse of tolerance in modern thought

  • Original language description

The aim of the article is to analyze Nicholas of Cusa's treatise De pace fidei in modern thought. Nicholas of Cusa's discourse of religious tolerance (reconciliation, peace) is still a matter of debate and different interpretations. His little treatise shows that the significant political and epistemic differences separating the Middle Ages from the Early Modern Age do not imply that tolerance is a specifically modern concept. The idea of "unity in diversity" presented in the works of Nicholas of Cusa is not restricted to historians of philosophical-theological thought only; his vision can serve as an inspiration for re-thinking of some serious questions of modern times. Careful reading of his works stimulates contemporary discussions on unity and diversity (alterity, otherness) in connection to such serious problems as the recent institutional crisis of Europe and certainly the inter-religious and multicultural animosities.
