The Linguistics Aspects in the Formation of Czech National Identity
Original language description
This paper focuses on the problem of collective identity from the ethno-linguistic point of view. In 19th century Czech language was one of the key building stones for the emerging Czech national movement in Bohemia and Moravia as parts of the Habsburg Monarchy at that time. The significant social processes took place in many levels, e.g. one’s consciousness or language interaction: he/she became aware and demonstrated his/her identity in various occasions, esp. by public using of Czech, reading national newspapers, being a member in Czech associations, etc. Reasons for this newly established support and identification of individuals with authorities are given and some aspects of the modern Czech – linguistically based – identity are emphasized.
