The Analogy of Divine Creation in Raymond Lull and Nicholas of Cusa
Original language description
Heraclitus said « The Lord of the oracle in Delphi neither asserts nor conceals, but hints » (DK frg. 93) ; these are the three options of theological speaking : univocal, equivocal, or analogical. In this essay I will show how Raymond Lull (ca. 1232-ca. 1315) derived from the transcendentals the « correlatives » («the good makes good» etc.) in order to capture analogical speech of God to the effect that the transcendentals are positive and univocal assertions that allow speaking of creation in analogy with the Creator. Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464) adopted the method of correlation between the levels of being and asserted the fundamental analogy that leads from man to God.
