Original language description

The article focuses on the topic of imprisonment which is perceived as a violent means of the proces of recatholisation. It follows the topic in the context of Silesian town Cieszyn in the 2nd half of the 17th century. On the one hand it describes imprisonment as not only an form of punishment, but also as a specific area of cooperation of both secular and church authorities in the town. On the other hand the article describes imprisonment as a specific type of the ritual of transition – by forced conversions to Catholicism local Lutherans were transformed from Lutheran believers to either Catholic converts or exiles. It changed their confessional and social status, as well as the status of the whole urban society. The transition of local society from Lutheran to Catholic lead to economic problems of the town which forced local authorities to initiate new means of recatholisation, represented mainly by recruitment of new Catholic citizens.
