The study analyses the proses of the renowned Czech expressionist Richar Weiner (1884-1937). It focuses mainly on the works that were written shortly before 1920 and published in three collections of short stories Lítice (1916), Netečný divák a jiné prózy (1917) and Škleb (1919). We regard these as the most valuable Weiner´s proses the reason being they deal with questions concerning the existence of mankind in general, questions that are permanently topical. Another valuable aspect of these proses is that they unveil the author´s complex mental world and his personal as well as civil attitudes.
