THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY IN MOSUL AND NINEVEH PLAINS BETWEEN 2003–2017
Original language description
The position of Iraqi Christians is often discussed in the context of the war against the Islamic state, who came to power in Iraq in 2013, but roots of the crisis are often neglected. The situation of religious minorities in Iraq was deteriorating since the end of Saddam Hussein´s regime, which created a power vacuum, filled by various militias. Failure of the Iraqi government to protect country´s minorities, targeted by Sunni and Shia zealots, was apparent since 2005 and eventually led to a massive displacement of different groups, significant among them being Christians. Although the Shia-led government, backed by U.S., was not hostile towards Christians, their protection became impossible particularly in Sunna regions, such as Mosul and al-Jazeera, whose populations soon created environment strongly discriminating non-Sunni inhabitants. The position of Christians in Iraq was, and still is, complicated: their rights, such as freedom of worship, are guaranteed by the Constitution and the laws, while some older discriminatory laws are still valid and enforced by officials. New laws, adopted by Shia government and concerning religious minorities, seem to be ambivalent about how to treat non-Muslims in Iraq, creating an environment of insecurity and doubts about the future of the multi-religious and multi-ethnical country. The paper will provide insight into the situation of Iraqi Christians since 2003, based on interviews with members of the community and officials of the country and analysis of events in the country and in the world. This contribution will present the results of the research grant IGA 2017.
