Caribbean Don Speaking: Poetry of Diaspora by John Agard
Original language description
John Agard, a well-established British-Guyanese poet, asks "Explain yuself / wha yu mean / when yu say half-caste." Similarly to other anglophone poets of Caribbean origin now living in Great Britain, Agard is concerned with themes of assimilation and racial discrimination. He voices social and racial inequality through his poetry where he frequently engages Creole as a means of cultural significance. He claims that he "do[esn't] need no hammer / to mash up yu grammar." Therefore, the paper will look at the ways the poet engages the language in order to show the special potential of Caribbean literature in exile. In addition, the paper will concentrate on Agards critical views of British xenophobic cultural stereotypes. Such stereotypes will be evaluated through the lense of diaspora and will be contextualized within the canon of British postcolonial literature.
