Japan, Australia and China´s New Silk Roads: From Hesitant to Pragmatic Cooperation
Original language description
China´s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) which launched in 2013 aims to better connect Asia with the Middle East and Europe. This ambitious project has already had an impact on many countries along the New Silk Roads both economically and strategically. The most prominent bystanders are the United States (US), Japan and partly Australia, which is a member of the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). Tokyo and Canberra cooperate closely with each other in a broad range of policy areas, including security. For both governments it has become increasingly difficult to balance their relations with China and the US. While Beijing is their main economic partner, Washington remains their key security partner. This contribution reveals that both Japanese and Australian developments are likely to lead to greater engagement of these countries in the BRI. However, their security collaboration with the US and India is also likely to continue to strengthen, which may give rise to criticism by China.
