Visions of Universe in Theological Works of Ruthenian Authors in the Seventeenth Century: Kyrylo Tranquillion Stavrovetsky and Simeon Polotsky
Original language description
The paper presents an overview and comparison of two concepts of Universe brought by two Ruthenian authors, Kyrylo Tranquillion Stavrovetsky and Simeon Polotsky in their theological treatises. While Stavrovetsky admires a harmonious Universe founded on peaceful cooperation of the four elements and does not focus on the superlunary world, Polotsky presents a scholastic description of the Aristotelian-Ptolemaic Universe, which is based on orderly motion. The difference between the two compared models reflects the transition to a more secularized and rationalized worldview even within the theological frame.
