Cultural and religious diversity – challenges for clinical and educational psychology
Original language description
Adam Anczyk, PhD a Agnieszka Krzysztof-Świderska, PhD - The increasing cultural and religious diversity of the EU countries, as for the migration processes are concerned, brings new challenges to psychologists, both practitioners, working in the different environments (clinical, educational, judicial), and researchers in the field. Culture and religion, understood as variables vitally influencing one’s psyche and behaviour are nowadays a subject of attention of the academics. It is to say, that the sub-disciplines of psychology: cultural psychology, cross-cultural psychology, psychology of religion or indigenous psychology are now having their renaissance period. This short, introductory course aims at providing participants with the basic knowledge on cultural approaches as applied in contemporary psychology, both in research and practice. We will start our course with the basics – presenting why (from the methodological point of view) it is vital to study samples outside the WEIRD population, and to include the cultural perspective in clinical and educational psychology. Then we will proceed to examples, showing that cultural diversity do provide some challenges for psychologists. Firstly, we will discuss some clinical matters – as we will present cultural diversifications of mental disorders, on chosen examples (we will discuss the issue of culture-bound syndromes as well). Working with patients/clients coming from different cultures or religious background forms a challenge, to which a practicing clinical psychologist should be prepared. After a short break we will proceed to the issue of cultural and religious diversity in schools, as the Polish case of religious discrimination in schools will be presented. We will also discuss the issue of specifics of working with children from other cultures, that is of importance for school counsellors. This short introduction will provide our listeners with a basic knowledge on cultural approaches in contemporary psychology, and raise the awareness of thinking about cultural and religious factors in the everyday practice and research.
