The contribution of attachment system to coping with life events and to psychotherapy

  • Original language description

The workshop presented by dr. Ety Berant. Attachment security is a resource that enables a person to cope in adaptive and regulated way with everyday life events, and this resource is crucial especially during stress related events. However, insecure attachment (avoidant or anxious attachment orientation) mitigates coping resources. For example secure mothers of children born with congenital heart disease report on higher mental health than their counterparts who are insecurely attached. Their seven year old children also report on better mental health. Secure attachment is also relevant for therapeutic processes. For example securely attached clients form a better working alliance with their therapists and benefit more from treatment. In this workshop we will discuss in depth the various contributions of attachment security to life events in everyday life, crises, psychopathology and therapeutic process.
