The chapter presents the context of European collecting before the introduction of the collection of Olomouc Bishop Prince Charles of Lichtenstein-Castelcorno, noting, for example the collections of Spanish kings, the English King Charles I Stuart, French King Louis XIV., aristocratic collectors like Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, Archduke Leopold Wilhelm and Earl Jan Humprecht Count Czernin. On that basis then describes the nature and scope of the collection of Bishop of Olomouc (Antonello da Messina, Dürer, Giorgione, Sebastiano del Piombo, Titian, Veronese, Caravaggio, Anthonis Van Dyck etc.).
