Word Order in English Superlative Adjective Phrase
Original language description
The Superlative Adjective usually requires the definite article preceding it. We are interested in the type of material that can be inserted between the definite article and the Superlative Adjective. Constructions like the two tallest boys and the absolutely tallest boy are frequent but strings *the handsome tallest boy and *the student oldest in the class are both considered ungrammatical. We searched the English Web 2015(enTenTen15) corpus in Sketch Engine for locality requirements of the article and elements preceding the Superlative Adjective Phrase, excluding the premodifier of the Adjective. We found strings similar to *the handsome tallest boy and *the student oldest in the class in that they had either an Adjective or a Noun in between. Our goal is to explain why some of the strings are grammatical and some of them are not.
