Ficino in the light of alchemy. Heinrich Khunrathʼ s use of Ficinian metaphysics of light
Original language description
Metaphysics of light constituted an essential part of the philosophical view of Marsilio Ficino (1533-1599). At the same time, it proves to be influential, i.a., among the Paracelsians of the 16th and 17th Centuries. The paper argues that Heinrich Khunrath (1560-1605), a prominent Paracelsian, alchemist, theosopher and “forerunner of the Rosicrucianism”, was inspired by Ficino’s conception of light as divine entity and of the Sun as the source of the divine animating light, present in the world. Specifically, Khunrathʼs advices to use burning mirrors to ignite “living fire”, necessary in the alchemical process, is to be interpreted as a reverberance of this theory. Similarly, the notion of the “light of nature”, used by Khunrath as well as by other Paracelsians, can be understood in the right way only if Ficino’s metaphysics and epistemology of light are taken into account.
