Linguistic Research on Gender in Ukraine
Original language description
Linguistic gender studies in Ukraine are currently at the inception stage. It applies both to the terminology and research techniques. A number of recent studies carried out on the material of "the Ukrainian-speaking community" show that the gender expression in the language and speech of Ukrainians is predetermined by the corresponding gender national program, motivated by universal categories with the national specificity of their transformations, because national linguistic gender studies are undoubtedly oriented towards their own realia and traditions. This paper attempts to describe this specificity, particularly the research areas and dominant scientific paradigms within Ukrainian gender linguistics and their terminological systems. It has been revealed that Ukrainian linguistic gender research is twofold. It deals with the linguistic system, the repertoire of its units in terms of the manifestation of gender as a socio-cultural construct. In addition, it focuses on the impact of gender on speech and the overall communicative behaviour of men and women. All in all, this study aims at informing the global scientific community about the advances in Ukrainian gender linguistics.
