Southeast Asia’s and Russia’s Relations with China
Original language description
The international workshop "Southeast Asia's and Russia's Relations with China" examines the relations of middle powers and a great power with the rising China. Theoretical approaches to analyze these relations, such as Neorealism and hedging, will be critically reviewed. The presentations will also assess whether the Belt and Road Initiative further deepened the relations especially of Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam with China. Thereby special emphasis rests on the political impacts of the unresolved territorial disputes in the South China Sea. Russia's relations with China are discussed with reference to the concepts of Moscow's "geopolitical loneliness" and "civilizational realism". Both in regard to Southeast Asia and Russia, a focus rests on perceptions and misperceptions of China in the political discourse, not least the phenomenon of Sinophobia.
