Different Perspectives of Primitive Art: From the Periphery of Art to a Political Instrument

  • Original language description

The present analysis will provide the definitions of the terms “primitive” and “primitive art.” It will follow the shift of these terms from the periphery to the centre of the art/philosophical discussions. The term “primitive” was included in philosophy for the first time at the end of the 17th Century, as a critical instrument. Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Michel de Montaigne criticize their society and use the opposite of “a natural and civilized man.” Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution and its ethnocentric implication changes the connotation of the term “primitive” as well as the value of the non-Western artefacts. The term “primitive” is fundamental for the concept of “primitive art.” It is associated with three challenges: Firstly, “primitive” cannot exist without its attendant opposite “civilized.” Secondly, the connotations of “primitive” are predominantly negative, when applied to cultures external to Europe. Lastly, these qualities result in contradiction, which constitutes the concept “primitive art.”
