The Battle of the Arts is an allegorical poem written shortly after 1236 by the French troubadour Henri d'Andeli. It reflects the then ongoing struggle between grammarians (mainly in Orléans) using classical Latin works in their teaching in order to learn their students good Latin, and their opponents (mainly from Paris), who wished to eliminate 'pagan' literature from school curriculum and to replace it with Christian texts. the latter part won. The chapter discusses the background of this allegory and the way how Henri d'Andeli showed the ongoing battle in his poem.
