Are Emotions Contagious? Elizabeth Spencer’s "Judith Kane"

  • Original language description

The article analyzes Elizabeth Spencer’s story “Judith Kane” from the collection Ship Island and Other Stories (1968). In spite of the author’s statement, as well as the opinions of critics and scholars, this article does not consider the story to be a study of an evil femme fatale. In the first part the story is explored as a study of the hardships three young southern intellectuals face when they strive to break down the wall of stereotypes, habits, and social expectations, including their own. The second part looks at the characters in the light of theories that consider human relationships and interpersonal communication next to impossible, such as that of the Israeli sociologist Shlomo Giora Shoham, occasionally complemented by the ideas of Walker Percy and Søren Kierkegaard. The last part, which deals with the psychological transformation of the narrator, also applies the typology of southern belles by Betina Entzminger and her predecessor Kathryn Lee Seidel.
