Original language description
The following contribution deals with the phenomenon of the “Illness of nerves”, although this term has very little in common with an actual sickness as is understood in a medical discourse, respective the psychiatric one. The main focus is on the intertwined relation with the literature in general, how it is shown there, what it creates and how it even got there. The research field is spread not only to the primary literary texts, but it includes also the work of literary criticism and texts of the medical discourse both academic and not academic. The conceptual background is discussed in the first part of this text, where it draws mostly from the English and French texts, and the literary analysis in the second part. As to the literary analysis, the four literary texts by authors from various part of literature of the first half of the 20th century were chosen, where the Illness of nerves is an element of the narrative structure. In the background of this text there is always hypothesis present, the hypothesis about possibility of existence of the Illness of the nerves not only in the main structure of the literary text, but as a part of a much broader discourse.
