Traffic laws must be enforced, to sanction violations and to deter offenders and encourage responsible driving. Enforcement actions target violations like speeding, drinking and driving, not using a seat belt, failing to stop at a red traffic light, use of mobile phones and others. Traditional methods of police enforcement include on-the-spot roadside checks and the use of automated devices such as speed cameras. To be most effective, police enforcement should be publicized, and involve a mix of highly visible and low-profile activities. To maximize the road safety benefit, enforcement should be aimed at road rule violations that have been proven to increase the likelihood or severity of crashes.
