The article looks at the tradition of national anthems in the United States from the Revolutionary War of the Eighteenth Century to the Civil War, the Civil Rights movement up until the present. Special attention is paid to the controversy surrounding the Star-Spangled Banner and the Black Lives Matter movement. The paper also looks at a number of alternative national anthems.
