The book is about the rise of an alternative Czechoslovak exile center in Melbourne, 1948 - 1989. If the Council of Free Czechoslovakia aspired to be an umbrella organisation coordinating exile activities worldwide, its disunity and the constant infighting gradually led to an erosion of confidence and to a decline in its authority in the eyes of the entire political diaspora. This led to a heavy atomisation of exiles and to the emergence of several &quot;power&quot; centers of Czechoslovak exile life, with Melbourne being one of them. František Váňa, the editor-in-chief of Hlas domova and the aknowledged leader of exile in Australia, was a reference figure, someone to be compared to only a few equally versatile and generally recognised individuals like Ferdinand Peroutka, Přemysl PItter, Pavel Tigrid or Josef Škvorecký.
