The chapter presents the basic approach of contemporary sociological theories of religion. It shows the general theoretical framework, which is the theory of modernization. It makes this theoretical framework concrete by using the example of secularization theory, and also introduces competing theories (e.g., rational choice theory). The chapter concludes by updating the sociological discussion of religion with reference to globalization theory and multiple modernities.
