The Influence of the Commonplace of Xenophanean Philosophical Theology on Athenagoras of Athens´Legatio pro Christianis
Original language description
Athenagoras of Athens´ apology Legatio pro Christianis presents Christianity as monotheism, which Athenagoras interprets in terms of the commonplace of Xenophanean philosophical monotheism. Part of Athenagoras´ interpretation of Christian monotheism is a Xenophanean critique of Greek mythology and religion. This Xenophanean critique is based on Xenophanean philosophical notion of god, so its reception also implies the reception of Xenophanean philosophical theology which heavily influenced Athenagoras´ Christian notion of God. Athenagoras thus confuses biblical and Xenophanean philosophical monotheism. He was neither aware of the substantial differences between them, nor the difficult theological problems of later patristic thinking that arose from his and other early Greek apologists´ adoption of the Xenophanean philosophical theology for interpretation of the biblical notion of God.
