Re-invented in Translation? Korean Literature in Literary Chinese as one Epitome of Endangered Cultural Heritage

  • Original language description

This chapter examines a specific discourse about modern (vernacular) Korean translations of hanmun. While hanmun signifies any text written in classical Chinese (Literary Sinitic), except where the term is used to refer to Literary Sinitic itself, as a medium of expression, the discourse examined here revolves specifically around writings in classical Chinese authored by Koreans. This discourse developed in parallel with, and in explicit reference to, the hangul-only policy of the late 1960s. Based on a collection of voices raised in newspapers since the mid-1960s, this investigation focuses on the rhetorical repertoire of the discourse.
