The Education of an Author: Gavino Ledda in Paolo and Vittorio Taviani’s Padre padrone

  • Original language description

This essay examines the Tavianis’ Padre padrone, an adaptation of the homonymous autobiographical novel by Gavino Ledda: a testimony of pastoral isolation followed by a long journey towards inclusion. The adapters re-read the literary model according to a Brechtian approach, aimed at encouraging the viewer's reflection on social and economic dynamics - the relationship with authority, the need for individual emancipation. In order to trace Ledda’s presence in the film, the contribution examines its first and last sequences, in which Ledda himself took part.
