Exploring the stucco decoration of the Sala Terrena by Baldassarre Fontana in the Kroměříž chateau

  • Original language description

This interdisciplinary international workshop, intended for students of conservation-restoration and art history, involves ten days of teamwork in the chateau of Kroměříž. The aim of the workshop is to conduct an in-depth investigation and carry out first intervention treatments on the ceiling of the stucco decoration by Baldassarre Fontana (1661–1733) in the northern Sala Terrena. He was one of the most prominent Baroque sculptor and stucco makers, from Chiasso in the Swiss canton of Ticino. Students and lecturers will discover the cultural value of this decoration, examine its material and technical features and assess the condition in order to develop an informed conservation proposal aimed at preserving its original quality. The workshop will be done with an interdisciplinary approach, complementing direct observation with research from the perspective of art history, conservation and the natural sciences. Students will work in an international team under the leadership of experienced foreign and domestic restorers, stucco makers and art historians. Art history students will have the opportunity to get acquainted in greater detail with the work of restorers and with the material research of stucco artwork. Conservation-restoration students will gain better insight into the work of art historians. Both groups of students will gain international experience with different approaches in understanding and preserving stucco decoration. At the end of the workshop, a report will be delivered on the interventions carried out including recommendations on future activities.
