The Grammar of English Infinitives with Czech Comparison
Original language description
This book focuses on the grammar of English infinitives with a comparison to Czech. There is an underlying structure common to all to-infinitives. The similarities are derivable from the irrealis feature of the infinitival marker to and the lack of agreement morphology. In this respect the infinitive is akin to other irrealis moods (subjunctive, conditional and imperative) and often alternates in their place. Infinitives may differ in syntactic properties and sizes: control infinitives are bi-clausal, raising infinitives are mono-clausal and there are two types/sizes of ECM infinitives. Bigger infinitives are more independent and form phases that often express irrealis. Smaller infinitives depend more on the matrix verb and may express realis meaning. Bare infinitives lack the to InfP layer entirely and often express realis meaning.
