This paper discusses the complex and multifaceted concept of citizenship, which has evolved over time and is influenced by both normative and empirical theories. It examines the moral dimension of citizenship and the way it is shaped by principles of equality, community membership, and global justice. The paper also reflects on the political basis and limits of citizenship, particularly in relation to migration, and the challenges of determining citizenship status in a globalized world with increasing mobility and migration. The development of the concept of citizenship has been marked by exclusivity, but also by ideals of equality and the social contract. The paper considers the need for a more inclusive approach to citizenship in order to respond flexibly to the challenges of a globalized world.
